Attorney A.G. Howell is a highly skilled, experienced criminal trial lawyer with more than 20 years of criminal law experience, handling every type of criminal case from homicides to drug trafficking, sex crimes, burglaries, thefts, assaults and DUIs. He is the only Wayne County native and REAL Republican running for DA.

Howell served four years as a prosecutor in the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office, more than a decade as a Wayne County Public Defender, and has handled approximately 1,000 criminal cases throughout his two decades of practice. Howell also served as Associate Solicitor for Wayne County Children & Youth Services where he fought for the rights and safety of abused and at-risk children and teens. He is a past solicitor for the Victims’ Intervention Program.

In addition, all of Howell’s relevant legal experience has been in Wayne County, not Philadelphia. He has longstanding relationships with law enforcement, the courts, the legal community and the families of Wayne County. Those relationships, coupled with his experience as a prosecutor and attorney, make him the most qualified candidate for DA.

Howell, 46, was born and raised in Honesdale, a few doors down North Main Street from where he lives today with his wife, the former Patti Murray, and four children. He is a third-generation attorney in the family firm founded in 1935 by his grandfather, A. Emerson Howell, where he practices with his father, Fred, a well-known community leader. He is a past Secretary and Treasurer of the Wayne County Bar Association, and a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He serves as Zoning Board solicitor for Palmyra, Lebanon and Damascus townships.

In addition to his legal credentials and accomplishments, Howell is also very active in the community. He is a board member and past president of the Wayne Memorial Hospital board; past president of the Honesdale Jaycees; past board member of the Wayne County YMCA; and a member of the PA Farm Bureau. He is a youth sports coach for baseball, soccer and basketball, and serves as president of Honesdale Biddy Basketball. He is a past president of TASS Soccer of NEPA.

“I was born and raised here and I’ve been a Republican since I was old enough to vote,” said Howell. “You know me and I know you. We’ve seen each other for years at church, the grocery store, restaurants and sporting events. I’m proud of who I am. I’m proud of my family and I’m proud of my community. And, I’d be proud to serve as your next District Attorney.”

A graduate of Honesdale High School, Howell earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Dickinson College and his law degree from the California Western School of Law in San Diego.

If elected District Attorney, Howell plans to implement a comprehensive strategy to address the opioid crisis, including aggressive law enforcement, a pre-charge diversionary program for first-time offenders, and a coalition bringing together all stakeholder groups, including law enforcement, doctors, hospitals, pharmacists, treatment centers, social service agencies, and parents. He also wants to establish education programs at all grade levels to teach schoolchildren about the dangers of opioid drugs, particularly prescription pills.

“Studies show that the earlier children learn about the dangers of opioid drugs, particularly the pills they might find in their parents’ medicine cabinets, the less likely they are, as they grow older, to use these highly addictive and dangerous drugs, or turn to the streets for substitutes like heroin,” he said.

Howell also wants to form a coalition with school leaders, municipal and state police to continue to make sure all of our schools are safe and in compliance with new state school safety laws. The group would also establish protocols to open lines of communication and alert law enforcement of potential threats before they turn into tragedies. He would also work with schools to stop abuse and bullying.

In addition to his own community service, Howell’s family has a long tradition of service dating back four generations. His great-grandfather, A.H. Howell, was the Superintendent of Schools of Wayne County. His mother, Cathy, built the track and field team at Honesdale High School into a championship-caliber program. And his maternal grandfather, Robert “Doc” Gummoe, was the school dentist in Hawley and served on Borough Council.

His wife Patti’s family also has a deep history of service in Wayne County. Her great-grandparents operated The Murray Company, which was founded in 1828. Her father, Joe Murray, retired as Chief Executive Officer of The Dime Bank. He also coached youth sports and served as Treasurer of the afterschool program, Communities That Care (CTC) from its inception until 2017. He was also a past board member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital and Community Foundation. Patti’s mother, Tish, operated Tish Murray’s Nursery School, where she helped raise hundreds of children in our community. Both Joe and Tish Murray were active in the Wayne County Library and St. John’s Church.
